Evolution is a constant process. We all move with time. The eateries in the bylanes of Old Delhi (Shahjahanabad) has also been touched by the viral phenomenon of social media resulting in their immense popularity. I have been frequenting these bylanes in midnight during Ramzan for many years, and every passing year, the crowd seems to be swelling. It is a food carnival, minus the music and dance.
A lot of food connoisseurs from different parts of Delhi come at the odd hours of night to sample the food of Old Delhi. This is also a good time for the Delhi-based food groups to organize the annual Ramzan food walk. The numbers and attendance in these walks are also growing every year.
The growing crowd also has a visible positive impact on the business. The benefactors are mostly the shops located at the Urdu Bazaar that marks the beginning to the larger Old Delhi. One shop, whose client count has increased by leaps and bounds is Qureshi Kabab. A few years ago, I had interviewed all the five brothers of Qureshi Kabab. Their success story is inspiring. Another development that I have noticed in recent years is the mushrooming of quite a few Cool Point shops in Old Delhi, selling — Shahi Tukda, Faluda, Rabri and Phirni. Not to forget the overhauling of Al Jawahar, Afzal Chicken and a few other restaurants. The latest sensation among the food eateries is Baba Biryani that brings flavours of Kanpur to the bylanes of Old Dehi.
Although, change is good, still miss the little quieter bylanes of Old Delhi.
