Jab I met Khubani Ka Meetha in Delhi

It may sound a very filmy kahani, but it’s actually a foodie kahani. It happened so that a few days ago, I was watching an episode of the food and travel show Raja Rasoi Aur Anya Kahaniya in the Epic channel. The episode was on the food habits of Leh Ladakh region. Among the many dishes showcased was a dessert made of the khubani fruit, trust me, till that day I had no clue about any dessert that could made of the khubani fruit. I remember my friends from the Leh Ladakh region while studying in Jamia Milia Islamia bringing this fruit from home, and how we simply loved eating them. In the show, culinary historian Pushpesh Pant mentioned that this dessert has great similarity with the famous Hyderabadi Nizami dessert Khubani Ka Meetha. Little did I know that a few days later I would be invited for a food writers’ meet at the Peninsular Kitchen in Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj, where I had the great fortune of eating this dessert for the first time in my life. Boy O Boy, what  a dish it is, royalty personified. Peninsular Kitchen is a coastal restaurant as it is evident from the name, and among other coastal dishes has many royal dishes from the Hyderabad of Nizam’s platter, Khubani Ka Meetha is one of them. That’s why Shah Rukh Khan said in OSO, “Agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho toh puri kayanat usko tumse milane mein jutt jati hai.” Picture abhi baki hai as there is more to Peninsular Kitchen.
